Between A Parked Spaceship And A Woodworking Station On The MCA Roof | Thursday Evening

It had occured to April this morning that she'd never actually been to the roof of her apartment building. Of course, "morning" for April on a day that she didn't have to work was, like, two o'clock, so it didn't really take her all that long before she actually made good on it.

By the time she made it up there, the sun was setting, and she had dinner in the sense that a pizza she'd bought on Sunday had been living in her fridge for the past half a week, so she figured she might as well bring what was left of it up to the roof (still in the pizza box, of course -- who bothered with plates?) and work on it there. The spaceship(s) and woodworking station meant there wasn't a lot of room, but if she hung out by the ledge and used that for a table, she was fine.

Huh. This was kinda nice.

"Yup," said April, pulling open the door that led to the second floor and heading through it. "They're supposed to be like scarier, hungrier rats."

That was not true.

"This'll take me right back to some of the scummier, nastier holes I've lived in over the years, then," Jono mused. "Like coming home."

Not quite.

Shooting him a glance just to check and coming away satisfied that he'd been suitably warned, April pushed open her apartment door.

It was... somewhat horrifying, yeah.

Jono peered inside. And then he shrugged a little when nothing leapt up to attack him right away.

"You couldn't find my room for the boxes and magazines, back when I was living in Massachusetts," he shared. "There were empty food containers strewn about, as well."

Those hadn't been his.

"I've seen worse."

He'd also lived in a dank, dark basement with no windows. So.

April had sort of been hoping for a more expressive response to that. "Huh," she said, side-eyeing him for a moment.

Then she set off for beer. "Don't sit on that one couch, it'll collapse," she advised from over by the fridge.

Jono was... about a half-inch away from actually depositing his behind on that couch. He straightened up again pretty quickly.

"What are you keeping it around for, then?"

Because removing it would take effort, Jono. Duh.

She shrugged, heading back over with a couple of beers. "It only collapses like half the time for me," she explained. "I don't usually have huge guys over."

Didn't ever, actually. This was a first!

Jono was still getting used to being referred to as a 'huge guy.' He'd been so skinny back in high school, realizing that he was built sort of like a tank these days was still a bit jarring.

"... Right. So, where can I sit?"

He'd clear a place on the floor, so help him. Or just sit on the air. Or something.

April gave that some thought, then kicked aside a pile of... something in order to make some space.

"There you go."

And see, look, she'd just be joining you on the floor, Jono, because someone didn't want to get eaten by a collapsing couch tonight.

Jono took a moment to consider this arrangement, and then shrugged and sat himself down there on the floor.

"Wasn't sure if that pile was there for a reason," he noted. "I always did hate it when people went and upset my mess. It was always right there where I knew it was going to be."

On the floor. Spread out for easier perusal.

"Oh, I can't find shit." Except for beer, thank god. "I just hate organizing."

That was sure to come as such a surprise.

Jonothon was stunned. Stunned.

"Fair enough," Jono replied with a shrug as he reached for a beer. Today was just the sort of day where he wouldn't complain no matter what sort it was, refined British tastes and a deep-bred hatred of American booze be damned. "It still isn't so bad. An entire apartment... Means there's more room for the mess to... sprawl."

Imagine all of this in one room. Imagine it.

"Well, it's Fandom." April opened a beer of her own, then tossed the pizza box on the floor between them. "Sprawling might lead to sentience."

"It doesn't need to sprawl to be prone to that, though," Jono pointed out. "I've had my guitar turn human and follow me around, before. Strat was possibly the only one on the island to ever wear more leather than I did."

April snorted at the mental image of it. "Hot."

"He was a ginger," Jono added, because that seemed like the thing to share. "And wore a muzzle."

And, for some inexplicable reason, was Japanese. Stratocasters were not made in Japan. Jono had stopped questioning that one years ago.

Fandom.

"So Fandom draws the line at talking guitars, I guess," April concluded. "Good to know."

"No," Jono replied, shaking his head. "I'm fairly certain Fandom doesn't have a line."

Because... No. No it did not.

Which naturally meant April had to figure one out.

"Has there ever been an... invasion of talking lizards that crawl into your hair and tell you embarrassing secrets about people?"

April, it was weird where your brain went. Just saying.

"No, but there were the onions that sat around taunting people until they cried, or until someone cut them up and eat them."

As a man with no mouth, that one had been difficult for him.

"And the emotional luggage, which appeared randomly with people's deepest issues spelled out in bold letters on the front."

"Fuck." Yes, April, very concise. "I don't want that."

"Well, don't tell the island that," Jono replied, shaking his head. "That's the best way to guarantee that it will happen, you know."

April shrugged. "Probably isn't enough room in here anyway."

She hoped.

She was still going to peer around just a bit, though.

"You say that and it'll just shove all of your things into a closet," Jono replied. "And don't say it won't fit in the closet. You should see some of the things that come out of that one locker. And Special Collections."
