Between A Parked Spaceship And A Woodworking Station On The MCA Roof | Thursday Evening

It had occured to April this morning that she'd never actually been to the roof of her apartment building. Of course, "morning" for April on a day that she didn't have to work was, like, two o'clock, so it didn't really take her all that long before she actually made good on it.

By the time she made it up there, the sun was setting, and she had dinner in the sense that a pizza she'd bought on Sunday had been living in her fridge for the past half a week, so she figured she might as well bring what was left of it up to the roof (still in the pizza box, of course -- who bothered with plates?) and work on it there. The spaceship(s) and woodworking station meant there wasn't a lot of room, but if she hung out by the ledge and used that for a table, she was fine.

Huh. This was kinda nice.

"Yup." Oh, Fandom, you were so, so special. "Soooo."

That was an ironic 'so.' Somehow she could make the distinction in a fairly unaffected tone.

"Decent week?"

"... A week, whatever it might be," Jono replied with a shrug, taking a mouthful of beer. "Seeing people off that I went to school with. A few goodbyes, here and there."

Some had been taken better than others. That was what the beer was for, perhaps.

"Working on a lesson plan, wondering what the hell I was thinking, deciding to teach. That sort of thing."

"Goodbyes suck," April contributed eloquently. Then after a sizable pause, she added, "But you probably won't be a shit teacher."

"There's the hope," Jono sighed. "You wouldn't be the first person to tell me that, though I suppose we'll see once I actually have a class in front of me that thinks I actually know what I'm talking about."

It was going to be an interesting semester. If he got through the first lesson without staring at the full room like a teal deer caught in the headlights, maybe he'd believe what people said about him not being shit at it.

"... This makes us coworkers, technically, doesn't it?"

"You mean aside from the movie production?" That was totally a legit job, Jono. God. "Guess so."

"Aside from that," Jono agreed, pointing a finger at her and smiling faintly. "Coworkers for something that we'll be seeing money for in the near future, at least."

See? Totally different, now.

"Aren't teachers' salaries, like, basically sticks of gum and knots of string and crap?" She was just sayin'. "I'm thinking cash might be a little much to hope for."

"I can make use of sticks of gum, these days, so I'll take them if that's all they have to offer," Jono decided. "It keeps me busy, at least. I... really need to keep myself busy."

"Lemme guess," April said, fiddling with the lid of her beer can. "You get bored, you go all serial-killery."

"No," Jono sighed, shaking his head. "I just get depressed."

If he got angry, he'd go all serial-killery. Totally different thing, that.

Well. That sucked.

"Guitar doesn't help?"

[furnaceface]

"Guitar helps sometimes," Jono allowed. "Unless I think too much."

About that musical career he'd never have, yes.

"Tried getting stoned?"

What, it seemed like a legit option.

"... Not since I was a teenager."

And it was sorely tempting. If a terrible idea.

April looked thoughtful. "I could go into Baltimore sometime," she said slowly, "figure out where to buy shit. If you want."

Jono. Jono, no.

"... Don't go out of your way for my sake," he settled on, offering her a bit of a smile all the same. He understood that this was April showing some measure of kindness, and he appreciated it in kind. But, still. "If you ever just happen to have some, I wouldn't turn it down, though."

Because what did Jono have, if not terrible choices?

No, really. This idea was terrible.

Like, the worst.

April shrugged. "I've never done it," she said bluntly, fiddling some more with her beer tab. "Wouldn't mind trying sometime."

Well, Jono hadn't seen that coming.

"You... really? You haven't?" Well. Blinking. He was going to sit there, blinking. "How is it that I'm the one person on the island who managed to make almost all of those terrible life choices before I was eighteen?"

It took skill, Jono.

"I guess you're just that immature and irresponsible," she decided. Super sarcastically, yup.

Then more seriously, she leaned her head back against the wall and explained, "I don't know, I always figured I'm like halfway there already without actually doing it."

"It's... not really all that big a deal," Jono shared, glancing at her. "I mean, I'm speaking with about eight years behind me where it wasn't even an option," picking up on it from other people psionically notwithstanding, "but all it really does is... kind of shut you down. For a while, everything is amusing, I suppose."

He shrugged.

"You don't need it."

She gave that a bit of thought, abandoning the beer tab in order to fully contemplate it.

"I could use that."

[furnaceface]

"You suppose so?" Jono pursed his lips, thinking that over, too. And then he shrugged. "Well, if you ever do want to give it a try, best to not do it alone."

... She'd probably be hilarious while stoned.

"I don't think you need it, but what do I know?"

She would, Jono. She really, really would.

"Next week?" she offered. "First week of teaching kind of calls for it."

Oh, hell. What did he really have to lose?

"Next week," Jono replied with a shrug. "Provided you can get your hands on some that's clean."

"Eh, I'll figure it out." Someone in Baltimore was bound to have stuff, right? "But yeah. Cool."

She was actually a little bit... intrigued, almost. That was rare for April.
