MCA #3, Tuesday Evening

April had seen a lot of horror movies in her time, but she hadn't seen many that involved killer fences. Actually, she'd seen exactly one. And now she was watching the first of its two sequels, Death in a Fence 2: The Fencening, in which the main characters on the screen were currently fleeing the murder fence while their friend Tray was being gnashed to bits in its wiry jaws.

"The first one was a lot better," she commented to Jack, reaching for one of the maybe-it-was-best-not-to-say-how-many-it-was beers she'd 'borrowed' from Caritas for this occasion. "At least in that one they died in order of how annoying they were. I kinda liked Tray."

His plan to go check out the killer fence at two in the morning had been endearingly stupid. She had to approve of that.

"How're you doing with all the blood and gore?" Please say 'super grossed out,' Jack. She'd love that a lot.

April snapped her fingers in approval. "Good answer." Anyone who wasn't scared of Teletubbies was probably some form of crazy, as far as she was concerned. "So... dead people, huh?"

It was possible that the three or four beers April had gone through had contributed to her asking that question, but it was just as likely that this was simply the kind of thing she asked once she reached a certain level of comfort with somebody.

Jack glanced away carefully, reaching for his third beer. "People didn't die in hospitals a hundred years ago the way they do now, April. Between that and being raised by a detective, and one who liked taking on the worst cases -- it's happened. I don't go looking for them."

[identity profile] hatesmoststuff.livejournal.com 2013-02-20 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, April probably shouldn't have asked that kind of question. The screaming from the movie probably didn't help, either.

She took a moment to think of a response to that, then settled on, "I saw six dead possums at a time once."

She didn't actually mean that to be a literal comparison to what Jack had experienced, because she knew it wasn't. But as a way to potentially reduce the awkwardness from her question, she thought it might work.

"Some guy mailed them to my friend Orin. It's weirdly easy to find dead possums in my town. So."

Jack gave her the strangest look, as if she were out of her mind, and then started laughing.

"Well," he said, "so that's basically the same thing. And probably smelled worse."

[identity profile] hatesmoststuff.livejournal.com 2013-02-20 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
April got that look a lot. It was weird that she hadn't gotten it so much lately, to be honest.

"Never sniff a possum," she advised seriously. "Even a live one, 'cause it'll bite you. And they all pretty much smell dead anyway."
bitten_notshy: ([neg] care to bet on it)

[personal profile] bitten_notshy 2013-02-20 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
"...good to know," Jack said slowly. "Is everyone from Indiana a possum expert?"

[identity profile] hatesmoststuff.livejournal.com 2013-02-20 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Might just be Pawnee," April said thoughtfully. "You get to be an expert in languages and world travel, I get possums. Yay."
bitten_notshy: ([neg] unimpressed in hat)

"I'm also absurdly attractive and have about three careers," Jack said loftily. "And I'm dating the sexiest woman on earth. And I have superpowers. But I'm not conceited, am I?"

By which he meant he didn't mean to brag, and he was sorry if it came out that way, and actually he thought April's life was sort of fascinating in it's banality.

[identity profile] hatesmoststuff.livejournal.com 2013-02-20 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
"You also have popcorn on your shirt," April informed him, flicking a kernel or two Jack's way. "...wait, superpowers?"
bitten_notshy: ([neu] lazy)

[personal profile] bitten_notshy 2013-02-20 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Jack flicked the kernel right back. "Werewolf?" he said, unable to imagine April didn't know. "It's not the most glamorous set of powers there is, but it still counts."

[identity profile] hatesmoststuff.livejournal.com 2013-02-20 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
"...Huh," April said, tilting her head slightly at him. "No, that's kickass. That'd be my second choice of superpowers if I got to pick. You know you look like the exact opposite of a werewolf, though, right?"
bitten_notshy: ([neu] in conversation)

[personal profile] bitten_notshy 2013-02-20 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Jack tilted his head back at her, half annoyed. "What does a werewolf look like?"

[identity profile] hatesmoststuff.livejournal.com 2013-02-20 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
"I kind of figured less blond and... dignified," April replied mildly. 'Pretty-boy-ish' was also an adjective that could have gone there, but she didn't want to be mean. "No?"
bitten_notshy: ([neu] always on guard)

[personal profile] bitten_notshy 2013-02-20 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Dignified worked. Pretty-boy-ish would have had Jack poutin, and thus proving April's point.

"I don't really know," he said. "The ones I've known have looked all different ways. I might be the only blond, though."

[identity profile] hatesmoststuff.livejournal.com 2013-02-20 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
"I like it," April evaluated. "It's kind of like watching Wendy the Werewolf Stalker where she's all tiny but kicks ass. Good irony."

So the pretty-boy-ish was kind of implied. It couldn't really be helped.

Jack made a face at her. "Couldn't you at least compare me to Lance? He's got the accent and the hair -- and he's not exactly built like a football player, either."

So yes, he understood the implication.

[identity profile] hatesmoststuff.livejournal.com 2013-02-20 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I guess," April decided. She was generous like that. "Lance prolly has the stomach for horror movies, though."

Teasing!
bitten_notshy: ([neu] b+w casual)

[personal profile] bitten_notshy 2013-02-20 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Teasing, but Jack took it as a playful challenge. "We still have another killer fence movie, don't we?" he asked. "I think we should watch it now."

They had to see who had the stomach for what.
